PAML, one of the country’s leading medical reference laboratories, has recruited Heather Colburn, Ph.D., for a Senior Scientist position in their Science, Technology and Innovation Group. In her new role, Dr. Colburn will focus on laboratory testing that supports PAML’s consumer-based product, Cinch™, which provides individuals with direct access to laboratory testing. She will bring innovative testing methodologies in-house to support PAML’s expansion of their product offerings for consumers.

Dr. Colburn indicates that American consumers are far more informed about healthcare matters than in the past.  With increasing medical knowledge, consumers have become more pro-active in regards to prevention and early disease detection. The continuing growth of an individual’s active involvement in his or her own healthcare (personalized medicine), has also increased consumer access to alternative health solutions, like Cinch, that are being made available in today’s marketplace.

An increase in consumer access is a recent development in the field of healthcare, making it possible for individuals to monitor their health proactively by initiating laboratory testing without prior consultation with a healthcare provider or a physician’s request for testing.

Dr. Colburn holds a Ph.D. and Master of Science degree in Analytical Chemistry from the University of Washington.  For the past nine years, she was a scientist at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), where her research interests focused on the detection and forensics of chemical and biological threat agents.  While at PNNL, she authored 15 peer-reviewed publications in addition to numerous written reports.  Prior to PNNL, Dr. Colburn served as a consultant at the Hanford Nuclear Facility, bringing volatile analysis methods in-house for the analysis of underground waste tank headspace vapors. Before her time at Hanford, she was a scientist at InnovaTek, Inc., where her research focused on aerosol collection and monitoring of biologics.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Colburn to our team,” said Francisco R. Velázquez, M.D., S.M., President and Chief Executive Officer for PAML, LLC and PAML Ventures. “PAML’s scientific expertise in laboratory diagnostics is at the core of our new Cinch™ product line. And, Dr. Colburn’s background in research and analysis will be a great asset to us as we continue to focus our efforts on expanding our consumer product line.”
