Pathology Associates Medical Laboratories, LLC (PAML) and Bloodworks Northwest (formerly Puget Sound Blood Center) have signed a Letter of Intent to collaborate on the delivery of specialized laboratory diagnostics and clinical services. PAML is one of the nation’s leading medical reference laboratories. A recognized leader in transfusion medicine, BloodworksNW serves patients in nearly 90 hospitals in the Northwest.

Sharing a common passion to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of patient care, the two organizations will explore potential alliances in several specific areas, including:

  • streamlining test menus to enhance delivery of patient care
  • improving information system best practices
  • identifying methods for delivering value-based care, including Six Sigma program development and subspecialty consultation
  • exploring complementary service enhancements for core competencies

“Both PAML and BloodworksNW recognize that healthcare systems and processes are changing dramatically, and that we must identify new and better ways to strengthen our continuum of care,” said Francisco R. Velazquez, M.D., S.M., president and CEO of PAML, LLC and PAML Ventures. “We have always had a high regard for the laboratory and diagnostic services of BloodworksNW, and by working collaboratively there is an opportunity to ensure quality patient care now and into the future.”

"This Letter of Intent underscores the potential for synergy between our two organizations, and the role we both play providing specialized lab services to support the highest quality of patient care,” said James P. AuBuchon, M.D., FCAP, FRCP, president and CEO of BloodworksNW. “By combining our strengths, we can improve the efficiency and scope of clinical services, improve access to specialized transfusion and transplantation testing, and ensure that healthcare expenditures deliver the maximum value.”

Discussions between PAML and BloodworksNW are expected to be ongoing.
