Carmen L. Wiley, PhD, DABCC, FACB, scientific director for PAML, a healthcare solutions company and one of the country’s top reference laboratories, was awarded the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) Society for Young Clinical Laboratorians (SYCL) Mentorship Award during the 2015 AACC Annual Meeting and Clinical Lab Expo, held July 26-30, 2015 in Atlanta, Georgia. She received the award on Monday, July 27, 2015, during the SYCL reception. The award is given annually to an AACC member in recognition of outstanding contributions to SYCL, and the mentorship of young, early career scientists. Dr. Wiley was the 5th recipient of this award.
SYCL provides crucial networking, mentorship, programming, and recognition opportunities for young clinical chemists. SYCL is a free benefit to AACC members under 40 years of age. American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) is an international scientific/medical society of clinical laboratory professionals, physicians, research scientists and others involved with clinical chemistry and related disciplines.
“I was surprised and honored to receive this prestigious award,” said Dr. Wiley. “To be recognized by the SYCL membership as a strong mentor is a great privilege. One of my interests within AACC is promoting the field of laboratory medicine among our young and early career clinical laboratorians by increasing the awareness of opportunities within the organization and leading by example. I want to encourage this group of individuals to be involved in our professional organization. Being recognized by SYCL with this Mentorship Award is a positive indicator that I have been successful in this goal.”
“We are proud of Dr. Wiley’s accomplishments and support her efforts in clinical chemistry and laboratory medicine,” said Francisco R. Velázquez, M.D., S.M., president and chief executive officer for PAML, LLC and PAML Ventures. “She is a tremendous asset to PAML and our joint ventures in our efforts to provide premium healthcare for our patients and clients. As a mentor, she provides the next generation of laboratorians with the guidance to reach their full potential and excel in their field.”
Dr. Wiley holds a doctorate in Organic Chemistry from the University of Washington. Her postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Chemistry was done at Mayo Clinic. She is a board certified Diplomat of the American Board of Clinical Chemistry (DABCC) and a Fellow of the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry (FACB). Dr. Wiley has been a member of AACC since 1999 and has held several positions in AACC at the national and local levels.
