Francisco R. Velázquez, M.D., S.M., president and chief executive officer for PAML, LLC and PAML Ventures, will be speaking about consumer health and technology during the 2016 Clinical Laboratory Management Association’s (CLMA) Spring Educational Event, scheduled for April 9, 2016, at the City of Hope National Cancer Center in Duarte, California. The semiannual conference attracts a cross-section of laboratory professionals, focusing on the hottest topics in the healthcare industry. In addition to consumer health and technology, this event will also address issues such as the Zika virus, the value of clinical lab tests, CAP and compliance, HIV, and test utilization.

Sandy Petering, member of the CLMA Los Angeles Chapter Board of Directors, articulated that, “Dr. Velázquez has presented at CLMA events in the past. His previous discussion was so well received that we invited him to speak again. The topic of his presentation is extremely relevant to the focus of our Spring Educational Event.”

Dr. Velázquez’ presentation, scheduled from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m., will examine the latest trends in healthcare-related technology products and services. He will discuss the uses and applications for sensors and wearable technology, such as fitness trackers. Smartphone tracking tools for health, wellness, and medication complaints will also be reviewed.

According to Velázquez, “As we know, the laboratory landscape is constantly changing, and technology plays a pivotal role in this evolution. As technology continues to play an increasing role in the daily lives of Americans, it is imperative that we pay attention to the gradual yet perceptible shifts in behaviors as they relate to health care. Emerging technologies assist people in improving their health, monitoring health conditions, navigating the health system, and comparing health care options. From an enterprise perspective, this shift means more than simply having a user-friendly app or mobile compatible website. It means adapting new innovations that enhance services and exceed the demands of a more empowered and technologically connected consumer. This is ultimately how the patient experience will be enriched, and what will draw consumers to one facility over another in today’s competitive healthcare environment.”

Dr. Velázquez is an experienced physician executive with a strong clinical background and excellent business leadership skills. He trained at the Mallory Institute of Pathology in Boston and holds a master’s degree in Healthcare Management & Policy from Harvard University. Prior to PAML, he served as managing director of Nichols Institute and managing director/vice president for Focus Diagnostics, both a part of Quest in California. He had direct oversight for the reference laboratory testing business at both laboratories as well as the clinical trials at Focus Diagnostics. Nichols Institute and Focus Diagnostics have both been selected as Top Places to work in Orange County (California) for three consecutive years. Other previous experience includes executive, faculty and medical leadership roles at universities in Texas, New York, Michigan and Massachusetts.
