Urea Breath Test for H. pylori in preparation for a BreathTek™ test:

  • Do not eat or drink 1 hour prior to taking the test.
  • Abstain from the following medications for 2 weeks prior to the test:
    1. All antibiotics
    2. Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) such as Prilosec and Prilosec OTC, Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, Zegerid and Nexium
    3. Generic versions of PPIs containing omeprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole, pantoprazole and rabeprazole
    4. Bismuth Preparations such as Pepto Bismol
    5. H2 antagonists may be substituted for Proton Pump Inhibitors.

These medications do not affect test results and include Zantac, Tagamet, Pepcid and Axid.

Before test administration, all patients should be asked the following questions:
  1. Have you had anything to eat, drink in the last hour?
  2. Are you on any antibiotics, proton pump inhibitors or bismuth preparations?
  3. Do you have PKU or are you on a phenylalanine restrictive diet (one of the components of Aspartame, a sweetener used in diet soft drinks)?

When testing to confirm cure: The test should be administered four (4) weeks after completion.

  • Ingestion of antimicrobials, proton pump inhibitors, and bismuth preparations within two weeks prior to performing the BreathTek™ UBT may give false negative results.

  • Premature TEST breath collection time can lead to false negative diagnosis for a patient with a marginally positive result.

  • If clinical signs are suggestive of H. pylori infection, retest with a new sample or alternate method.

  • A false positive test may occur due to urease associated with other gastric spiral organisms such as Helicobacter heilmannii or in patients who have achlorhydria.

  • Pranactin®Citric contains a quantity of Phenylalanine that is approximately equivalent to a diet cola soft drink.

  • The BreathTek™ UBT has not been studied in patients less than 18 years of age.

  • Please refer to the complete Directions For Use for procedures, precautions, and limitations.
